To encourage students to study in China is a window for Qinghai University to open to the outside world and an important bridge for friendly exchanges between China and foreign countries. Since 2015, Qinghai University has sent three Pakistani postgraduate students to the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University for training. Shouldering the important task of cultivating international students assigned by the university, medical staff at the department see both opportunities and challenges.

The language barrier makes new comers befuddled

Naveed Ashraf, the first Pakistani student to the department, was a bit "unaccustomed" to the new environment despite his five years of study in China already.

In the beginning, he found it hard to fit in given the shift at the department in Chinese. He was like an “outsider” because of the language barrier, and thus had to read books or play with his cell phone all day long. He was confused also when taught in the operating room due to the impossibility of communication in English.

How to better train foreign students and postgraduates is a new and extremely challenging task for the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery. The first problem for it lies in how to remove the language barrier.

Work together to maintain the China-Pakistan friendship

Naveed, who has lived in Qinghai for two years, and his junior fellows Sami (萨米) and Ali (阿里) have established a deep friendship with Chinese fellows and teachers at the department. They eat together and study together. They have witnessed the increasingly deepened China-Pakistan friendship.

Make persistent efforts to improve the cultivation of international students.

To cultivate foreign students requires continuous exploration and innovation, and tutors at the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery are thinking over it and working hard.

In the future, while Qinghai University continues to improve the postgraduate training program, the Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery will make constant innovation and exploration into the cultivation of talented foreign postgraduate students based on its actual situation, considering the high incidence of hydatid disease, and by dint of its talents and technological edge in the field of hydatid disease diagnosis and treatment, so as to make new improvement in the cultivation.

Promote the scientific training of international students, and contribute to the cultivation of talents for countries along the "Belt and Road"

The Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery of the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University is responsible for undergraduate teaching, postgraduate training (including foreign student training), standardized training for resident physicians, training for general practitioners and key physicians from community-level medical institutions, continuing medical education, and advanced teaching for physicians. This year, it passed the national specialist doctor training qualification assessment, and will soon launch the training course.

The development of the department benefits from leaders of Qinghai University and its Affiliated Hospital, and also from the unwavering determination and practice in reform and opening up. As stated in the report to 19th CPC National Congress, China can only see development through reform and opening up, and we shall keep drawing the beneficial achievements in human civilization, and build a well-equipped, systematic, scientific, standardized, and effective institution to give full play to the socialist system of China. The Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University will make continuous efforts to promote the innovation and development of foreign student cultivation in the new era. It will make contribution to the cultivation of medical talents and those for countries along the "Belt and Road." (Provided by the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University)
