On August 28, the Provincial Department of Science and Technology organized relevant experts for the evaluation of the result of the “Research on Qaidam Wolfberry Germplasm Resources and Green Organic Cultivation Technology and Its Demonstration” project jointly completed by the Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences of Qinghai University, Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology of CAS, Qinghai Provincial Forestry Technology Promotion Station, and Qinghai Nuomuhong Farm.

Based on the investigation, collection and evaluation of wolfberry germplasm resources at home and abroad, a Qinghai wolfberry breeding platform and a wolfberry germplasm resource nursery have been established in the project, and genetic diversity of wolfberry germplasm resources evaluated by various means. With the comprehensive evaluation of the agronomic and economic traits of wolfberry varieties, wolfberry varieties suitable for Qaidam wolfberry production areas have been selected and identified. Multi-channel and multi-method breeding experiments have been carried out, with more than 10 excellent clones obtained and “Green Wolfberry No. 1” examined. Based on the monitoring and analysis of the nutrient composition and mineral element composition of wolfberry samples from various planting areas in Qinghai, and by dint of high-throughput analysis, corresponding genes and loci that affect the synthesis of flavonoids and other inclusions have been located, the reasons why the high altitude environment of Qinghai promotes the accumulation of flavonoids, carotenoids and other substances in wolfberry revealed, and the advantages of wolfberry in nutrition and efficacy from Qaidam clarified. A technical system for wolfberry seedlings, hard-twig cuttings, and soft-twig cuttings has been established, and the survival rate of soft-twig cuttings increased to over 95%. Five wolfberry seedling breeding technology demonstration bases have been built with 20 million high-quality seedlings that have a purity of more than 95%. The trellis based wolfberry cultivation technique has been developed on an innovative basis, with the fruit growing all over the trellis and its quality and yield enhanced. The main diseases and pests against the wolfberry in the Qaidam Basin have been identified, effective control agents and methods found, and the technical methods for green and efficient cultivation of wolfberry proposed. Also, techniques for drying the fresh wolfberry, against hardening of dried wolfberry fruit, and for fruit wax removal and anti-oxidation for fresh fruit have been established. Five green and high-efficiency cultivation bases for demonstration have been built, and the promotion and demonstration scale expanded to 12,000 mu. One fine wolfberry variety has been examined and two approved, three invention patents and one utility model patent authorized, four local standards formulated, and 44 papers published with 2 in the SCI journal. The project revolves around the key technical issues for the development of the wolfberry industry in Qinghai. After more than ten years of research and practice, a green and efficient cultivation technical system for wolfberry on the Qinghai Plateau has been shaped, so as to effectively promote the sound development of the wolfberry industry.

The expert committee regarded the result as up to the international advanced level after the evaluation.
