On the evening of 21, Beijing time, the "12th World Congress on High Altitude Medicine", a top event of its kind, kicked off with the holy lantern lit in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. More than 400 high altitude medicine experts from 28 countries such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, attended the congress. Hermann Brugger, Chairman of International Society for Mountain Medicine, hosted the congress. According to the released academic achievements, a “Special China Session” was set up for the first time. Representatives of Qinghai University accounted for one-third of the session as the major force. In addition, many others from the university conducted academic exchanges in other major sections of the congress in the form of speech, poster or others. The paper "Another Cause for High Altitude Polycythemia" by Dr. Tang Feng attracted the international attention, and its full text was published on the website of High Altitude Medicine & Biology based in the United States.
In recent years, the high altitude medicine research in Qinghai University has shifted from domestic to international, from the backstage to the foreground, and from a subordinate position to a leading role. It has published many world-class scientific research results that have been recognized and published around the world. The “Qinghai Standard” for high altitude medicine headed by and involving researchers at the university is the only global standard for diagnosis based on achievements made by the Chinese. The university has also cultivated a group of research teams with international research backgrounds and professional standards. Among the official representatives at the congress, thirteen doctors graduated from the university. It has built a scientific research platform up to international standards. Recently, chairman of the International Society for Mountain Medicine visited the High Altitude Medicine Research Center of Qinghai University and said: "It is the largest and the most well-equipped high altitude medicine research platform in the world with the best team!".
