On the evening of May 12, the ASC20-21 Student Supercomputer Challenge Finals came to an end at Southern University of Science and Technology. The supercomputing team of Qinghai University was selected from more than 300 teams around the world and competed with 28 teams from universities at home and abroad, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Jinan University, Monash University of Australia, and EAFIT University of Colombia. Our supercomputing team won the first prize in the finals together with Tsinghua University and Jinan University and was ranked among the top ten in the world, which is a breakthrough achievement.

In the final round, our supercomputing team achieved 64.1 trillion floating-point arithmetic operations per second with 3KW power dissipation, setting a new world record for computing performance. Meanwhile, the floating-point performance of over 1.82T flops in the HPCG benchmark test also set a new world record. Academician Xue Qikun, Principal of Southern University of Science and Technology, highly praised our supercomputing team, and believed that the achievement fully demonstrated that the system design and system optimization level of Qinghai University in the field of supercomputing had reached a new height.

The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge is organized by China and supported by experts and institutions in Asia, Europe, and the United States. It aims to promote the exchange and training of young supercomputing talents among countries and regions through the platform of the competition, enhance the level of supercomputing applications and R&D capabilities, bring into play the scientific and technological driving force of supercomputing, and promote technology and industry innovation. The competition has been held for nine consecutive years, attracting more than 10,000 university students from all over the world, making it the largest supercomputing event in the world with the largest number of participants.

This is the sixth consecutive year that our university has participated in the competition. From being barely selected for the next round of competition at the beginning to our presence at the international stage now, it fully reflects the remarkable achievements made by our Computer Technology Department in teaching and research capacity under the counterpart support of Tsinghua University over the years. The breakthrough achievement of the supercomputing team will give a strong impetus to the cultivation of supercomputing talents, international exchange and cooperation, and discipline construction of our university, and will also promote the further development of supercomputing application technology in our province.
