On August 17, the Science and Technology Department of Qinghai Province organized relevant experts to evaluate the results of the self-selected project of Qinghai Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, "Research on the Potential of Anaerobic Fermentation of Rapeseed Cake to Produce Biogas and Microbial Community Structure". After the material review and on-site report, the evaluation committee considered that the research results reached the leading level in China.

The project compared the combined effects of different solids content and inoculation ratios on the methanogenic properties of rapeseed cake through medium-temperature batch anaerobic fermentation experiments, and clarified the potential of anaerobic fermentation of rapeseed cake for methane production. The project studied the biogas production characteristics of low-temperature mixed fermentation of rapeseed cake and cow-sheep manure in different ratios using an agricultural biogas digester as a fermenting device. The maximum biogas production was achieved when the dry matter ratio of rapeseed cake and sheep manure was 2:1. The biogas slurry and biogas residue after mixed fermentation could be used as good organic fertilizer for agriculture. Meanwhile, the project used high-throughput sequencing technology to study the changing characteristics of microbial community structure in different periods of mixed fermentation of rapeseed cake and sheep manure, and identified functional bacterial and methanogenic archaeal taxa. The microbial community structure is also found to be correlating with volatile fatty acids and ph.

During the execution of the project, four papers (one on SCI, one on EI, two on core journals) were published, one invention patent was applied, and one master's degree candidate and one undergraduate student were trained. Through the implementation of this project, it has enriched the types of raw materials for biogas projects, provided new ideas for the rational use of rapeseed cake resources, and provided technical support for the resource utilization of agricultural waste such as rapeseed cake and livestock manure and the promotion of low-temperature anaerobic fermentation technology.
