On March 24, the "Thousand Foreign Experts Program" project team of the College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences trained 53 technical staff members from Xining No. 1 to No. 6 sewage treatment plants, Xining No. 1 Reclaimed Water Plant, and Huangyuan County Sewage Treatment Plant on detection techniques for cryptosporidium and giardia in water sources.
Cryptosporidium and giardia are two important food-borne and water-borne parasitic protozoa that can cause severe cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in humans and animals with diarrhea as the main symptom. With the improvement of national living standards, the detection of cryptosporidium and giardia in water sources has been included in the drinking water standards in China. The training was divided into on-site laboratory demonstration and theoretical training. First, in the laboratory of the "Thousand Foreign Experts Program" project team, members demonstrated on-site the filtration, purification, and staining microscopy of water samples; then, distinguished experts in the the "Thousand Foreign Experts Program" including Professor Panagiotis karanis, the researcher Ma Liqing, the assistant researcher Cai Qigang and Dr. Wang Guanghua illustrated the hazards and prevalence of cryptosporidium and giardia, why the research should be carried out, how to do water sample concentration, purification and staining microscopy, and progress in molecular biology diagnosis.
After the training, the participants said that they had renewed their understanding of cryptosporidium and giardia, figured out the importance of their positions, mastered certain detection and handling methods, and thus benefited a lot.
